This week encompassed quite a lot, with me getting started on my secondary research, experimentation, and even some planning.
The research this week was secondary, consisting of looking other videogame title sequences and making note of the technical aspects of each one, such as: motion graphics, colour, sound, music, and overall tone and art-style.
The purpose of this task was to allow me to gain ideas for my own title sequence, by looking into the works of others in the industry. This task granted me inspiration and furthered my idea building, as well as furthering my knowledge on the medium of the title sequence, it's codes and conventions, and how to make a truly exceptional one. It will shape the project to come, as I form all my ideas around the inspiration gained here.
The experimentation section of the week involved following after effects tutorials, to give me the ability to pull off techniques I was heavily considering using in my product. This includes things such as rotoscoping, video effects, and text effects. From this I gained a greater knowledge of the tools in after effects, effecting how my project will work out in the planning/production stage, as I figure out how the title sequence will play out/ what techniques it will involve.
The purpose of this task was to strengthen my skills and knowledge with after effects, and help me learn the things I wanted to know in order to utilise them effectively when creating the final product.
Planning consisted of getting down notes, and working out what I plan to do in each shot, and how to match it all to the music.
At first I wasn't sure how to work out the music, but came up with an unorthodox solution of marking off the shots to the music in premiere pro, almost like a non-visual animatic.
The purpose of this task was so that I knew how much video I would need for the sequence, as well as how many shots there are and how long they will last for working out storyboards and such later on.
Overall, I have gained a large amount from carrying out these activities this week. I have gained and learned a lot about planning out a sequence such as this, especially one that is planned to be created to music. This task highlighted my weakness with understanding traditional planning techniques, and there's probably a better way to do things than how I did them.
From the experimentation task, I gained knowledge of some new after effects techniques to add to my arsenal of after effects skills.
From research, I gained a lot of inspiration for what my project could turn out like, and the techniques I need to use to accomplish that goal.
Overall, The work carried out here has really shaped my skills in after effects, as well as understanding my chosen medium, shaping the project as a whole by deepening my thought process.
