Section 1: Rationale

Reflecting on my time over the last year and looking towards the skills and experience I have acquired has helped me grasp an idea of the area of expertise that I want to focus in on for my final major project. I have used all sorts of different adobe software, practicing skills in all areas of media and the creative industry.

Before starting the course I had minimal knowledge in creative media skills, and now coming to the end I have gained a myriad of new skills and knowledge with my time here. This has helped influence the areas that I wish to work in, allowing me to have a try in different areas and find what I like most.

From my experience working on this years unit 9/10, and last years FMP, I have found that I have an interest and decent amount of knowledge and skill in after effects. It is a software I find myself getting to grips with quite easily and have an affinity for.

Section 2: Project Concept

With my decision to peruse a project in after effects, I want to differentiate it from my last years FMP with a similar premise. Since I already know how to use after effects, I instead want to focus the majority of my research on primary research.

The idea is to create a title sequence relevant to the target audience of 16-24 year olds, allowing me to easily survey and question other students for great primary research. The style of sequence will conform with what the surveyed want. The purpose of this is to hopefully better understand how the opinions of the target audience form a piece of media, and how to create a project that conforms to what needs to be included to create a maximally effective product.

I will do research into title sequence artists, such as Saul Bass and Kyle Cooper, in order to gain inspiration and ideas for my product. I could show their work to the target audience, to gain feedback on what styles they prefer.

For my final product I intend to produce a title sequence in after effects, designed around the data taken from audience research, and based off of a movie/game/show of my choosing. This mostly just includes the use of the after effects software itself, along with some minor help from premiere pro and other adobe software, and depending on the style I go for it might feature some video taken from the media. During my research I want to find out the type of content I should create the title sequence for, something that would challenge and interest me, and also fit the target audiences interests.

The final product will be an after effects title sequence for a media of my choosing, I am considering a videogame, which will focus on motion graphics and use of impressive effects and techniques. This will be similar to title sequences you may see in movies/TV, and I plan to create it roughly one minute 30 seconds in length. It will be exported in the video format of MP4.

Section 3: Evaluation

For this project I will be required to evaluate all aspects of the overall project and critically look at how I performed, and the work created.

I intend to critically reflect on how I have performed, the quality of my output, and how I could improve on my work. This will be done throughout the whole project, and performed at the end of the project once all the work is finished.

I plan to record my progress throughout on my website, allowing me to very easily document all my decision making, changes to my ideas, and all progress made in my work.

My evaluation needs to be up to a decent standard, critically reviewing my output and detailing whether it meets my intended aims. I should make sure it isn’t just a description of what I did.
